World War 2 has proved a rich mine for Catherine Chidgey (The Wish Child, Remote Sympathy) and Weng Wai Chan (Lizard’s Tale) who have both won awards for their novels set in Germany and Singapore respectively. In her teens Catherine was an exchange student to Germany, an experience that left a lasting impression, while debut novelist Weng Wai, who was born in Singapore, has drawn on family memories of the Japanese invasion.
