Working with Māori communities and in New Zealand museums, teacher and curator Mick Pendergrast published the well-known resource Raranga Whakairo (1984). The book presents 208 Māori weaving patterns gathered over 20 years from a variety of sources. Renowned artists Jo Torr and Tarryn Motutere (Ngāpuhi) will create and exhibit a number of kete whakairo honouring weavers known and unknown, through history and to the present day. The installation will include designs recorded in Raranga Whakairo, as well as patterns from kete in The Elms collection and those associated with local weavers.
During the Festival come and visit this unique, open air installation at The Elms, that celebrates the history and significance of kete whakairo and the weavers of Aotearoa.
