Born to an American mother and Kiwi father, Jess Chambers spent equal time growing up in sunny California and the chilly South Island of New Zealand before settling in Wellington and establishing herself as a solo and collaborative artist.
Her first album is ‘entirely gorgeous’. A rare flower in today’s crowded music world, Jess has an ethereal voice that soars lightly to hit impossibly high notes and just as easily swoops down to the sultry, lower register. You can hear this delicate-yet-dynamic voice on her own album and on The Woolshed Sessions.
She comes to Tauranga with an impressive backing band including Justin ‘Firefly’ Clarke (Fat Freddy’s Drop,) and Age Pryor (Ukulele Orchestra). Their two live shows at WOMAD last year received standing ovations. And Jess won the APRA country music award this year for her song “Stringing me along”.
“Her voice is pretty special… each lyric is crystal clear, and it all sounds utterly effortless. Damn she’s good.”
