The Three Rs
Reading, writing and rugby - our guests can’t get enough of them, even after the long feast of the Rugby World Cup.
Chris Laidlaw is a former All Black (1963-70), Rhodes Scholar, diplomat, MP and now the host of Radio NZ National’s popular
Sunday Morning show, while Lloyd Jones, a former club player, is an award-winning author. And both have also written about rugby. Lloyd’s novel The Book of Fame looks at the 1905 “Originals” tour of Britain and France and their startling success - met by 20,000 people at the station in Cardiff - and the rugby “ideal” that grew up around them. Somebody Stole my Game by Chris, meanwhile ponders how cold, hard cash has skewed that ideal.
